ACHNE Releases New White Paper on Faculty Qualifications for Community/Public Health Nursing

The Association of Community Health Nursing Educators (ACHNE) has released a new White Paper, Faculty Qualifications for Community/Public Health Nursing. This comprehensive document provides essential guidelines for colleges and universities to consider when hiring or assigning faculty to teach undergraduate and graduate community/public health nursing (C/PHN) courses.

Addressing a Critical Need

Despite the increasing importance of C/PHN education, there are currently no specific guidelines for C/PHN educators in the accreditation standards set by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) and the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN). ACHNE's White Paper aims to fill this gap by outlining the minimum and preferred academic and experience qualifications that faculty should possess to effectively teach C/PHN content.

The White Paper recommends that C/PHN faculty should:

  • Hold a terminal degree in nursing or a related field.
  • Possess relevant C/PHN experience to ensure practical application of knowledge.
  • Be certified in community/public health nursing or a related specialty.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to ongoing professional development and growth.

The Importance of Qualified Faculty

Qualified C/PHN faculty are essential for preparing the next generation of nurses to address the complex health challenges facing communities. By following the guidelines outlined in ACHNE's White Paper, nursing programs can ensure that their students receive the highest quality education and are equipped to make a significant impact on the health and well-being of populations.

A Special Thanks to the White Paper Team

We would like to express our sincere gratitude to the dedicated team of experts who contributed to the development of this important white paper. Special thanks to the co-chairs, Dr. Shawna Hebert and Dr. Mark Siemon, for their leadership and guidance throughout the process.
