Activities

  • Defend the need for nurses to be active in the policy arena.
  • Design a learning strategy for the application of Kingdon’s Theoretical Model for Policy Change in nursing education.
  • Design a learning strategy to teach the development of a policy brief in nursing education.

Objectives

  • Participants will describe need for nurses to be active in the policy arena
  • Participants will discuss the application and significance of Kingdon’s Theoretical Model for Policy Changing in nursing education
  • Participants will be able to illustrate how to teach a policy brief in nursing education.

Dr. Heide Cygan, DNP, RN, PHNA-BC is an Associate Professor at the Rush University College of Nursing, in the Department of Community, Systems and Mental Health where she teaches public health nursing to graduate and doctoral students. She is the Co-Program Director of the Advanced Public Health Nursing and Transformative Leadership: Population Health DNP programs. She earned her Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing from the University of Michigan and her Doctor of Nursing Practice in Advanced Public Health Nursing from the University of Illinois at Chicago. As a board-certified public health nurse, a main tenant of Dr. Cygan’s practice is understanding the reciprocal relationship between humans and their environment. She is a student health and wellness expert, with a focus on policy development, implementation and evaluation and the role of the school nurse. Dr. Cygan is committed to improving population health and life outcomes through innovative academic-practice partnerships. She immerses nursing students in practice and research efforts at community-based partner sites. Dr. Cygan is a practice-scholar, publishing in peer-reviewed journals and presenting at national conferences. She is the president-elect of the Association of Community Health Nurse Educators.

Dr. Stacy Arriola, DNP, RN, CNE is a Visiting Clinical Instructor at the University of Illinois Chicago College of Nursing, in the Department of Population Health Nursing Science. She teaches in the pre-licensure undergraduate nursing program.  She earned her Bachelor of Science in Community Health from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Loyola University Chicago, Master of Science in Nursing from the University of Illinois Chicago, and her Doctor in Nursing Practice in Advanced Population Health Nursing from the University of Illinois Chicago. Dr. Arriola’s nursing expertise is in population health nursing. She is credentialed as a Certified Nurse Educator demonstrating her expertise as an academic nurse educator. As an educator, she focuses on shaping the next generation of nurses to be nurse leaders and change agents, and to improve the health and well-being of individuals, families, communities, and populations they serve.
